First of all, thank you for subscribing to my newsletter. I’m not a professional (and won’t claim to be), but I will do my absolute best to provide clear, concise writing about the topics I cover! The newsletters going forward will pretty much be laid out like this, with occasional longer/shorter ones depending on what’s being covered that week. The goal is to deliver a short, bite-sized email every Monday morning with the past week’s news, highlights, scores, and other tidbits that I think others will find interesting!

Current (11/17) NBA Cup standings

First, a little background on the NBA in-season tournament…

The NBA In-Season Tournament was introduced in 2023-24 as the league's first ever in-season competition, styled after European soccer tournaments. Every NBA team participated in the inaugural tournament that ran from November to December 2023, beginning with group play games before advancing to knockout rounds. The Lakers ultimately won the first NBA Cup, with LeBron James earning the MVP award after defeating the Pacers in the championship game in Las Vegas. Each player on the winning team earned $500,000, while runner-up players received $200,000. The tournament served multiple purposes - adding competitive stakes to early-season games, generating more fan interest before the traditional peak of NBA season, and creating a new marquee event for the league. While there was initial skepticism from some fans and players, the tournament generally received positive feedback for bringing playoff-like intensity to early season matchups. It’s still quite early in the tournament, so it will be exciting to see if the Lakers can repeat their win from the last one! How have you been enjoying the NBA Cup?

So far, it’s been an exciting tournament, with a few standouts already making their way to the forefront of tournament watchers! I’ve bolded some of the teams that I will be keeping my eye on as the tourney progresses!

All eyes on Mike Tyson and Jake Paul

The Netflix Slam boxing event delivered high-stakes drama across three marquee matchups on November 15th.

In the welterweight division, Mario Barrios claimed the WBC title with a commanding performance against Abel Ramos, adding another chapter to his impressive career trajectory.

The co-main event featured a historic rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, two of women's boxing's most decorated fighters. Taylor and Serrano previously fought at Madison Square Garden, with Taylor taking the victory in a hard fought slugfest. I didn’t watch the first match when it aired, but after seeing the fight this past Friday, I plan to! Taylor's technical precision and ring generalship proved decisive this time around as she successfully defended her undisputed super lightweight titles in a 10-round showcase that lived up to the immense hype surrounding their rivalry.

The night's most talked-about bout saw Jake Paul face off against boxing legend Mike Tyson in an 8-round heavyweight exhibition. Paul, leveraging his youth and recent boxing experience, secured a controversial victory over the 58-year-old former champion. While Tyson showed glimpses of his trademark power, particularly in the early rounds, Paul's conditioning and measured approach ultimately earned him the win.

This event marked Netflix's entry into live boxing programming, potentially signaling a new era for how combat sports are broadcast and consumed.

Juan Soto’s prospective new organization is still up in the air

The Juan Soto sweepstakes has officially kicked into high gear, with contract projections that would make even tech CEOs blush – we're talking potential deals in the $600-700 million stratosphere. Welcome to baseball in 2024.

The Yankees, fresh off their 2024 campaign with Soto, appear to have the inside track and are reportedly eager to keep their star in pinstripes. But across town, Steve Cohen and the Mets are making serious waves. Reports indicate they've already hosted a "very detailed" meeting with Soto's camp that was "extremely well" received. Industry whispers suggest the Mets might have a staggering $660 million offer, although nothing's official.

Don't count out the rest of the AL East heavyweights. Both the Red Sox and Blue Jays have made compelling offers to land the generational talent. Meanwhile, the Dodgers, despite their early favorite status, have been surprisingly quiet in recent discussions.

The process is still in its early stages, with formal offers yet to hit the table. The Yankees' upcoming meeting with Soto could be a pivotal moment. For Soto, the decision likely boils down to more than just dollars – he's hunting for that elusive World Series ring, and team competitiveness could be the deciding factor in this historic free agency battle.
